The Basic Spikes are first given to Dillon by Mayor Bryson on they first day in Riverford , enabling the use of the Grind Attack in Dillon's Rolling Western. They reappear in Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger after you enter the 2nd village.

To initiate the grind attack, first roll into an enemy. Upon making contact, hold the stylus on the touch screen to begin the grind. Releasing it will end the attack. As the Basic Spikes can only grind four times in a row, one might upgrade to stronger spikes to enable a longer grind.
Attacking with the grind attack will wield more items for Dillon, but increase the time spent in battle.
